What restoration can recover
Tears, creases, water damage, foxing, fading, and the yellow-orange colour shift that affects almost every colour print from the 1960s through the 1980s.
Missing areas can be rebuilt where there is enough surrounding information to work from — a torn-away corner of a background is straightforward; a missing face is not.
The original never leaves the studio
Restoration works from a high-resolution copy. The original is photographed or scanned here and handed straight back, and the work happens on the copy.
Nothing is done to the print itself, which matters when it is the only one that exists.
Worth knowing before you bring something in
- Bring the print rather than a photograph of the print — detail that looks lost is often recoverable from the original and never from a phone snap of it.
- Do not try to flatten, clean or tape a damaged print first. Those attempts are usually harder to undo than the original damage.
- If several copies exist in different conditions, bring them all; the best parts of each can be combined.
