Blue Roof Accident

As professional photographers, we are sometimes called upon to undertake assignments that go beyond the usual scope of our work. These projects often assist people during difficult chapters of their lives, helping to tell a story that needs to be heard.

It might be for a legal matter, a workplace accident, or even a dispute involving poor craftsmanship. Over the years, I’ve been honored to use my skills to help others in these moments, creating images that serve as powerful tools in pursuit of a resolution.

Earning Trust Through Long-Standing Client Relationships

Many of these assignments have come from long-standing relationships with clients who trust us, including family portrait clients who later turned to us for professional legal photography. When a need arises, whether it’s documenting property lines, accidents, or faulty construction, we’ve stepped in to create images that help convey the truth in courtrooms or mediation settings.

One assignment that stands out was flying over a large deed-restricted community to photograph more than 100 roofs covered in blue tarps. A roofing contractor had done substandard work, leaving homeowners with leaky roofs just weeks after installation.

The contractor was dismissing the residents’ concerns, but our images told a clear story. These photos played a key role in the residents’ legal team securing the repairs they desperately needed—an investment of just a few thousand dollars in our services led to revenue for repair costs covered for the community.

But of all the assignments, one remains closest to my heart. A dear friend’s wife and daughter were involved in a devastating head-on collision on I-75 while heading to a concert. A driver, traveling in the wrong direction, caused a catastrophic accident that left both mother and daughter hospitalized with severe injuries. The mother faced multiple surgeries and was on a ventilator, while her daughter suffered numerous broken bones. Adding insult to injury, the insurance company downplayed the severity of their condition and refused to pay out accordingly.

Capturing Tragedy to Advocate for Justice

After visiting them in the hospital to offer comfort and prayer, I knew I had to act. I contacted a trusted attorney from The organization that I am a member of Network Professionals, and, with the ICU nurse’s clearance, brought my cameras to document their injuries. These images, created with full permission, were sent to the insurance company. Within just two days, the tide turned. The funds necessary for their recovery began to flow, providing the care they so desperately needed.

Today, I’m grateful to share that both mother and daughter are thriving against all odds. Their resilience and recovery remind me why I do what I do.

Leading With Heart: Photography as a Calling

For me, photography has always been about more than creativity, style, or profit. It is about the people my business brings into my life. This wasn’t a job I charged for—I didn’t even think twice about it. While the attorney later sent compensation for my work out of his own heart, I would have gladly done it for free.

Helping others in their time of need is what truly matters, and I believe the revenue will always come from other opportunities when we lead with heart.
