Getting everyone looking human at the same moment
With four or more people, the odds of a single frame where everyone looks good are poor. The answer is to keep shooting through the moments between poses, which is where families look like themselves.
Small children set the pace. Once they are done, they are done, so we photograph them first while the goodwill lasts.
What to wear as a group
- Coordinate rather than match — a shared palette of two or three colours, not identical shirts.
- Keep the tones in the same family, so nobody jumps out of the frame or disappears into it.
- Avoid large logos and bold patterns; they date the picture and pull the eye.
- Dress for the setting — beach clothes on a beach, warmer layers indoors in winter.
Prints outlast the file
Family portraits are one of the few things people still print large, and they are frequently the photograph that ends up on a wall for twenty years.
Worth thinking about where it will hang before the session, because a frame composed for a horizontal space over a mantel is not the same as one composed for a vertical stairwell.
