Group Photography

Teams, staff, classes and whole organisations, photographed together.

Getting a group photographed well is a logistics problem as much as a lighting one: everyone visible, nobody blinking, and the whole thing done before people lose patience.

We have been running group sessions around Tampa Bay for three decades — from a department of eight to an entire school.

Photographed by Moorman Photographics, a locally owned studio on 16th Street North in Saint Petersburg, working across Tampa Bay for over thirty years.

A group photograph is a logistics problem

The lighting is the easy half. The hard half is getting thirty people into a frame where everyone is visible, nobody is blinking, and the whole thing is done before patience runs out.

That comes down to arranging people by height and build so there are no gaps and no floating heads, and to shooting enough frames that there is one where every set of eyes is open.

Lighting a group properly

A group is a wide, deep subject. A single light close to the camera falls off across it — the people at the ends end up darker than the ones in the middle.

Lighting a group evenly takes more than one source and enough distance to keep the falloff gentle, which is the main practical difference between a group photograph and a snapshot of a group.
