Photographing an animal
Pets do not take direction, and a session that depends on them behaving will not produce much. What works is patience, a long enough lens to keep some distance, and shooting continuously through the brief moments an animal is settled and looking.
Getting down to their eye level is most of the difference between a pet photograph and a picture taken looking down at a dog.
Treats are permitted and encouraged
- Bring the good treats, and something noisy — a squeaker gets a head tilt and two seconds of eye contact.
- Come after a walk, not before. A dog with energy to burn will burn it.
- Bring the person the animal actually listens to.
- Expect to work around them. Nothing about an animal session runs to schedule.
